Tonight we had a plan in the instance that neither Sensei Brewer or Sensei Hartman showed up. The cast of characters were few: myself,
We decided we would each select a kicking technique and focus on it for 15-18 minutes. Things started out with Erbe, who selected front kick. He did a very good basic class focusing on using the center to project power outwards, building to a partner drill.
McCabe was next, and did a great breakdown of side thrust kick. He too built it into a nice partner drill and several of the students showed some of the best side thrust kicks I’ve seen in awhile. He took special care to build on “pointing your butt at the ceiling” to present the proper hip rotation.
By this time, it was running late… almost quarter til 8. We mentioned that if anyone wanted to stick around from the first class, I was going to present hook kick. Basically, that pared the crowd down to what we normally have for an advanced class, so I took my 15-20 minute segment and did a basic breakdown of hook kick. We did it without partners first, but then I noticed that not many people were getting the path of the kick correct so I had them get in groups of three.
One person’s job was to hold the kickers leg up as they front kicked at a 45-60 degree angle past their target. This person was acting as “an invisible third leg” to hold the kicker in proper position for them to do the hooking action of the kick. The kicker then rotated their foot into almost a side thrust kick position, and then on the third count would snap their heel into the stomach of the intended target. I was told afterwards that this was a very fun and effective way to figure out the mechanics of the kick, so I consider it a success. I capped off my segment by letting those that felt comfortable just attempt to do the kick at their targets, several people were doing a good job by the end.
Oh, I almost forgot my Sochin goal… Dukes, Garls, and I did 8 before class, and Garls, Erbe, and I did 7 more during the remainder of the second class, which brings me to my 15 for the day. The stats spreadsheet is on Tasha’s laptop which is currently in Bloomington, so you’ll all have to do with just the percentage for tonight.
Sochin Counter
Accomplished / Goal == Percent Complete
280 / 2000 == 14.00%
