Tonight’s class was great! We started off with Standard Warmup #2348, followed closely by one of the best truly basic workouts we’ve had in a long time.
We started off with standing punch… we did about 80 of those (I lost count after 50). To follow this, we moved to reverse punch. I don’t know if it is all the core training talking, but WOW did this feel good tonight. Really whippy and still centered… almost felt like I knew what I was doing for a minute or two. We moved on to moving in front stance followed by some front kicking, where Sensei Brewer noticed that I was cheating on my front kicks a little… kicking before my knee was fully up. I wasn’t aware I was doing this either and tried my best to correct it during the rest of the class. We ended up with front kick, stepping down into a punch. That felt pretty good, but I was starting to lose my center a bit at that point. Definitely had a good sweat up, that was one of the more fulfilling first classes we’ve had in awhile.
The Sochin was also much in full swing tonight. We (Garls-san and I) did 15 kata before class. I was pretty happy with that, but I knew at that point that I had more in me. I also had the dangling carrot of my 300th Sochin looming on the horizon.
So I knocked out five more in between classes, but Erbe-san wanted to do another one in order to get the one that “felt good” so I did another three before it was time for second class to start.
Sensei Brewer decided to treat us to some more kata. We did some Tekki Shodan and Tekki Nidan, and then we got to do some Sochin. We ended up doing three, and by this time my legs were SCREAMING. Also, McCabe decided to ask which direction you step when coming back to yoi.
Apparently, I had been doing this wrong. I may have shown Erbe that way… and I got some crap for it. 🙂 Afterwards, Garls-san offered to share some of the blame, since he thinks we started doing that to get back to our starting point properly. That didn’t keep me doing it that way, or keep me from bothering to check that point out in any of the materials I’ve been looking over.
But that’s OK, I still ended up with a total of 26 kata tonight. This is the first time in the process where I haven’t been able to end on a multiple of 5, but I’m not OCD enough to care too much about that.
What a great class tonight though… I’m beat, but its the good kind of beat that tells you that you really accomplished something.
