I was able to knock out seven Sochin tonight before class, and for whatever reason they were feeling very smooth and collected. I think I gave myself enough of a physical break from doing the kata that my body was ready for it again. My total thus far is languishing a bit due to the complexities of stitches and the busy nature of my Summer schedule.
Tonight’s first class remained quite basic. The group was split off into two groups, youth (< 16 yrs old) and "seasoned karate people". We did basic techniques moving up and down the floor for a large portion of the first class, rounded out with some basic sparring drills and partner training. I got across from
The second class consisted of all the Heian kata, Hangetsu, and Bassai Sho. Since I’ve only done Bassai Sho a few times, the movements are still quite foreign to me. Sensei Brewer tried to help me understand the bunkai of the last two movements, however my brain was sufficiently overloaded and I couldn’t comprehend what it was that he was trying to illustrate. Apparently, that large protracted grabbing motion can be a “catch/arm bar” type of situation when you view it through non-retarded eyes. It took me a few times to finally realize what it was that Sensei was trying to get across, and I’ve got the gist of it now.
I really enjoy Bassai Sho. It takes the aspects I like about Bassai Dai and puts them in a series of quicker paced “fast guy” technique combinations. I’d like to do more of it after this Sochin goal is conquered, however I may take the opportunity to chalk a handful of these up this month since
