My lovely wife mentioned that it would be nice to get some calendaring software set back up again, since it had disappeared when I formatted my Linux box late last year. First, I tried the Lightning extension for Mozilla Thunderbird. The interface is pretty good, however it seems to allow you to do stupid things (like create 0 minute length meetings) and then not re-access them to delete them.
I decided eventually to return to the Mozilla Sunbird project, which has a few more features and seems to be a little more polished than the other alternatives right now. I published my calendar file, and then set to work getting PHP iCalendar set up. It was very easy to install (simply an untar situation), however a few of the settings were a little bit of a pain in the butt. I eventually got it working, so now I should be able to access my calendar remotely when I’m away from the house. With password authentication, of course. 🙂
Both of these projects appear to work well enough, however I get the feeling of something not quite complete with them yet. I don’t know if its the propensity towards vague error messages like “Method not allowed” and “Calendar is not in appropriate mode for this action”, but it is clear that more work needs to be done still. But they’re trying, and hopefully they’ll come out with a feature-rich solution before we know it.
Either way, I got to be a nerd today. Huzzah!
