iPod Autopsy

Two days ago, my iPod started acting extremely funny. It started with a clicking sound, and then it would not synch. I got the sad folder icon, followed by the sad iPod icon. I thought that maybe the battery had just gone out, so I put it on the charger.
The next morning, I decided to attempt to synch it again. This time it gave me a message indicating that the iPod was corrupted and needed to be reset to factory settings. I did that, and it popped back to semi-life.
I listened to a few podcasts and some songs, and noticed that things were strange between song transitions and the menus were freezing up. A certain song was freezing the iPod so bad that it would stop the song and drop to the menu. The iPod was continuing to exhibit a clicking sound, so I did some searching.
I found that some iPod exhibiting “The Click of Death” can be fixed simply by reseating the hard drive cable. That means I had some surgery to do. It took me about 15 minutes with a screwdriver to crack the case, but it only took a few seconds to reseat the hard drive cable.
I closed everything back up and tried the podcast again. No problem. No clicking. I tried the song that froze up twice, and it was fine. No clicking. I WIN! 🙂
