I made it to the dojo tonight, Paul B got the flu so I went on my own. We did a relatively basic warmup and then moved on to some body shifting drills. The footwork was pretty interesting, and is probably the best described using a kicking combination.
Start in sparring stance, do a rear leg front kick. Instead of stepping straight forward, you shift your body forward and step out at a 45 degree angle. After you land, do a front leg front kick and reverse punch at the 45 degree angle. Return to sparring guard, then switch legs and return to facing forward by stepping forward with your rear leg and resetting your guard.
We did this same drill with reverse punch and then jab. It seemed very Sensei Brewer-like and I took to it quite well, I think if I work on it enough I’ll be able to use it in kumite effectively.
After that, we moved on to kata. Sensei Tarrant asked me what my katas were that I was working on, acknowledging that I was working on Sochin. “But what else?” he asked. I blurted out Nijushiho. So we did that together, he was pointing out a few stylistic differences. After the first rising upward arm bar, he makes a large circle with his hands prior to the double punch. He repeats this approach at the end of the kata to move into the last two movements. Aside from that, we found our two interpretations very similar. He said he was happy with my kata, and that we’d do more soon.
In all it was a good night, I’m ready for a snowy and lazy weekend!
