Last night was interesting… I spent an extra two hours at work with one of the Chinese coworkers of mine doing a code migration. It had come to my attention that I had irritated her at some point during the last one of these migrations because it was done at 12:00 am and apparently her focus was disrupted by my attempts to be cheerful at such an hour and talk about some outside of work things.
This, to me, was greatly retarded, but I still felt bad for causing her to make a few mistakes along the way. For me, I can multitask with the best of them. Talking and coding at the same time aren’t a big deal, and talking and FTPing something can be done with no more effort than talking alone. I took the opportunity to apologize last night and make things right and it turns out it was just a big misunderstanding. I worry sometimes that I’m going to jeopardize my career because of things that I don’t realize or can’t control, but then things end up working out just fine. I just have to keep remembering that some people that are employed here are potentially the most annoying people on Earth (you know who I’m talking about). If they’re still around, I’m fine.
After work got done, I got to go over to my cousin’s house and fix her computer. It just “stopped turning on”. It was a difficult problem, Windows would get just past the startup screen and freeze on the desktop before the icons load. Safe mode did the same thing. I attempted to reload Windows and it wouldn’t even make it that far, and then I heard it… the scraping of drive head on platters that usually denotes a dying or damaged hard drive. I hadn’t heard it earlier due to the washer/dryer going in the other room.
I have to bring my extra drive over to confirm that this is indeed the problem, but I’m about 90% confident that a new hard drive will solve their problem.
After that, I came home and watched the finale of American Idol. I’m happy to see that finally the right person won the contest. Good for her!
