Last night was the signing and the moving… both have gone rather well. The signing process was pretty painless, I basically got to sit there and initial this and sign that until the woman ran out of paperwork.
After we signed, my aunt gave us this basket of Great Superstition full of spices and herbs you’re supposed to rub into the household to give it a nice briney karmatic coating before moving in. That was pretty cool, but that wasn’t the end of it. My aunt believes so strongly in dehumidifiers, she drove us out to Menards to purchase one for us. So we now have a moisture vaporator in our basement trying valiantly to keep it at 60% humidity.
We then moved on to the process of moving our crap. My grandparents showed up first, and we were well into loading their trailor with stuff by the time my parents showed up with their SUV. In the end, it took a scarce two and a half loads to get more than three quarters of our stuff over to the new house. The pains in the butt were the same as usual… the bed, which is just large and hard to get up stairs, the futon, and the entertainment center. The entertainment center was something that we’re buying from our cousin and that we did not have before, so it was it’s own unique obstacle when it came to getting it in the door. We prevailed in the end, and it now lives in my living room.
We got most of our boxes moved to the new house as well. By the time we were done for the night, my back was so wracked out that I could barely lay down. We ended up making a run to Wal-Mart for Spider Killer and Therma-Care. Tasha also needed hose for her important business meeting today, but I’ll let her elaborate on that.
After we got back, I spent about fifteen minutes saturation bombing the front of our house with bug spray, laying waste to the minions of the night. We scarcely unpacked enough stuff to be able to sleep for the night… Tasha did a good job of unpacking the essential bathroom gear for the morning, for which she deserves much thanks.
The shower in our master bathroom is very odd. It has been constructed for elvenkind. It could have gnomish influences, because it has a mechanism that is probably the most befuddling thing in the universe to turn on the shower. Apparently you need to turn on the bath and then push the faucet mechanism up. The part where the water comes out pushes up slightly, and then you turn it to the right and it should engage the shower. It took me a few minutes to figure it out, and I don’t think it works if the bath is actually turned off. It was worth the effort though, because the pressure and temperature is MUCH better than the old house. The toilet is also better too. This thing ramps up to a near tornado of excrement removal.
Anyway… the folly of not unpacking a little bit became more apparent this morning, as I was searching the kitchen boxes for sandwich bags. I failed, and had to wrap my sandwich in paper towels.
All we have left to move tonight is the big ugly black chair, a lamp, the desk, and a few miscellaneous odds and ends. Then the unpacking will begin.
